Please introduce yourselves to ilovecf.com and tell us a bit about Shutter Slice.
Hello ilovecf.com. We are Shutter Slice! We are a South Wales based professional photography and videography team that thrive on new and innovative ideas.
When and how did you meet, how was Shutter Slice born?
We have been friends for years, probably about eight. We went our separate ways after school. Luke went to London to get a degree and I did a bit of travelling. Luke actually came out to Australia in 2008 to travel the east coast with me. On my return I got really into photography, I bought my first dslr in Sydney and came home and got really into it. We met up at the end of 2010 and discussed joining forces. Luke had seen my New York video that I documented over Christmas that year and really liked it. I had always been a big fan of Luke's work so it made sense to work together.
Tell us about your latest photoshoot.
Our latest shoot was actually for British Gas. We filmed a short message for the managing director which is now on the intranet for everyone employed by British gas to see. It was a new experience, nothing like we have done before. We learnt a few new things and got to rub shoulders with the big dogs.
What's the most striking photo you've ever taken and why is so special to you?
The most striking photo I've ever taken... That is a tough one because I've taken thousands of photos... Probably a shot of my friend Rose. It was shot in the Old Boys Village. She is dressed in her ballet attire in an empty blue pool caked in graffiti, with a church in the background and an obtrusive sky - there's something about the atmosphere and the clashing colours. Also the contrast of elegance and tragedy. I like that shot a lot.
What type of videos give you the most satisfaction?
Videos that give us the most satisfaction are the ones where we have full control over the concept and aesthetics. Shooting promo videos is fun but there's not a lot of room for creativity. Videos that we can experiment and really adhere to the Shutter Slice feel and vibe are our favourite videos to shoot. On the website the video 'fall is step' is our own creation to our own storyboard. Also 'Recognition' gave us plenty of room for spontaneity, I think that's when we come into our own.
If you could choose anyone, who would you love to work with?
We would love to start working with popular bands and creating some exciting new music videos. But if I could work with anyone in the world it would be Spike Lee. Spike, if you're reading this I will be in New York in September - call me!
Cardiff and Barry seem a popular place for TV and film at the moment, why do you think this is?
I think the release of Gavin and Stacey has been a big help for Barry. There's that new film Submarine that was shot in Barry as well. I think it's popular because it's such a strange little town, certain parts are beautiful but you know you shouldn't be hanging about too long.
So what's the plan for Shutterslice, what do hope to be doing in the future?
In the future we want to make more short movies of our own. Maybe we should be taking advantage of Barry's popularity at the moment! Also we want to get more music videos in the pipeline. We have a few prospects in New York city at the moment, so we'll see what happens. We'll take Shutter Slice global!
What is your favourite restaurant in Cardiff?
Would have to say: Wagamamas and Bayside Brasserie in Mermaid Quay - awesome food.
What is your favourite bar in Cardiff?
10ft tall and Clwb Ifor Bach. Good company and great music. Also you don't have to conform to wearing a collar and loafers!
Where would you take someone on their first visit here, to show them Cardiff at its best?
First visit to Cardiff I would probably take someone to the Bay for a wander, there's a great ice cream parlour on Mermaid Quay, then plenty of choice for good food and plenty of alcohol.
