New Theatre

With a rich history, the New Theatre is a beacon amongst Cardiff's now-thriving collection of theatres and arts venues. Built over a hundred years before both the St david's Hall and, of course, the Wales Millennium Centre, the New Theatre is the oldest surviving traditional theatre in the Welsh capital, and still presents a year round selection of musicals, drama, dance, children's shows and family pantomime. Now fully restored, this delightful Edwardian venue is right in the heart of the city and boasts some incredible stories, including: a 1908 single matinee performance by the divine Sarah Bernhardt, a performance by members of the Russian Imperial Ballet, including the celebrated Anna Pavlova in 1912, and the Welsh National Opera choosing the theatre as its first official home in 1954.

Also, the theatre hosted the first ever performance in Wales of Dylan Thomas' 'play for voices', Under Milk Wood, and in 1994 saw Anthony Hopkins make his long-awaited return to the stage in Theatr Clwyd's August, adapted from Chekov's Uncle Vanya, which also featured Richard Burton's daughter Kate.
