Wales Millennium Centre

The Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) opened in 2004, and is already regarded as a world class arts and cultural destination. Well known for its unusual architecture, Wales Millennium Centre is one of the most unique and lively performing arts centre in Europe, attracting over 1.5 million visitors since it was opened by Her Majesty The Queen. Already, this iconic building has featured in Torchwood and Doctor Who, and housed blockbuster West End musicals, opera, ballet and contemporary dance, hip hop and stand-up comedy, art exhibitions, workshops, training days, free daily foyer performances, as well as guided tours, bars and restaurants.

More on that fascinating architecture: in October 1996 the architects, Percy Thomas Partnership (now Capita Percy Thomas) were appointed. That same year Arup was awarded the contract for structural and services engineering. Arup Acoustics was also awarded the contract for delivering solutions for WMC's wide-ranging acoustic requirements. Planning permission was granted in March 2001 and in December 2001 the building contract was awarded to Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd. With advice on theatre planning and technical installation from Carr & Angier - the team was in place to plan, design, build and deliver this highly complex and multi-disciplined project. Roger Spence (WMC's Project Director) acted as 'client representative' throughout this phase. He and his team were responsible for ensuring that WMC's interests were protected and the project was delivered on time and to budget.

Separating the design of the structure from the design of the acoustic and architectural enclosures, the team embarked on what was to be a unique building programme, allowing construction from the inside out. This innovative approach allowed for refinements in architectural and acoustic design to take place whilst allowing work on the structural frame to start and indeed finish on time.
